"Target Settings and Categorization of Building Energy Use and Urban Microclimate Design to Mitigate the Adverse Impact of Climate Change"

Synopsis
Buildings take up over 70-90% of electricity consumption in the city and account for more than half of the greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted citywide.  Hence, building sector has great potential in contributing to the city’s GHG reduction target.  How to establish a framework and strategy to focus and coordinate the demand-side management approach to electricity consumption is critical.  Reporting and benchmarking of building energy performance data is necessary.  The talk will cover the target settings and categorization of building energy use.  Case studies on online benchmarking tools for commercial buildings will be illustrated.  The “What’if” scenario tool is an effective way to evaluate the strategy and estimate the potential of energy saving.
In the subtropical environment, like Hong Kong and Macau, the intense urban heat island (UHI) effect and heat stress lead to the health and comfort of people is increasingly a concern in the face of challenges brought about by climate change.  The presentation will illustrate the science and principles of urban microclimate design. Strategies to optimize microclimate conditions are stipulated and illustrated by both local and overseas case studies and good practices which would help the practitioners to balance and enhance indoor air and lighting quality and outdoor microclimate for their projects.

Mr. Eric Ao, CEM, CMVP, and CAP, has been working in the energy management field for more than 9 years. As a senior consultant, he has led and was a subject matter expert in a variety of projects in the Asia Pacific region, where he helped clients improving building performance while reducing asset management costs. Eric is also a specialist in energy metering and building system integration and a pioneer in monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx), a data-driven practice that leverages big data, IoT, and analytics to elevate engineering minds. He led the team in deploying the biggest monitoring-based commissioning platform in Asia Pacific at MGM Macau.
